DNS/WINS Settings Help

This page enables you to configure DNS/WINS in the printer. The same Hostname and Domain Name is used for DDNS over both IPv4 and IPv6, if enabled.

When you are satisfied with your selections, click Save Changes to keep the settings or Discard Changes to keep the previous settings.

For more information about TCP/IP settings, see:

Name/Domain

Hostname (IPv4/IPv6) - This is the name the printer registers with DDNS and WINS so other devices on the network can refer to it by name. The default name derives from the printer's Ethernet address (for example: XRX00000A1E25); however, this value can be set by the user. The value in this field may be overwritten by BOOTP/DHCP. Hostname can be 63 characters in length maximum. The same Hostname is used for DDNS over both IPv4 and IPv6, if enabled.

Domain Name (IPv4/IPv6) - This is the domain the printer resides in and is used by networking protocols to properly communicate with other devices on the network. This value can be set by the user, BOOTP, or DHCP. If set by the user, the value in this field may be overwritten by BOOTP/DHCP. Domain Name can be 255 characters in length maximum. The same Domain Name is used for DDNS over both IPv4 and IPv6, if enabled.

DNS (Domain Name Services) Configuration

Use these fields to define the addresses of up to four name servers (DNS); two with IPv4 addresses and two with IPv6 addresses are supported. The values in these fields may be overridden by BOOTP/DHCP. A server with an IPv4 address can be used to look up either an IPv4 or an IPv6 address, as can a server that has an IPv6 address. If a name server fails to resolve a query the next server is tried. No DNS lookup can occur if all four name servers are undefined.

Name Server IPv4 Address 1 - Enter the IPv4 address for the primary name server. A value of all zeros indicates that no server is configured. This address is required for DNS configuration. The format is x.x.x.x, where x represents a decimal number from 0 - 255. The value in this field may be overridden by BOOTP/DHCP.

Name Server IPv4 Address 2 - Enter the IPv4 address for the secondary name server. A value of all zeros indicates that no server is configured. This address is optional for DNS configuration. The format is x.x.x.x, where x represents a decimal number from 0 - 255. The value in this field may be overridden by BOOTP/DHCP.

Name Server IPv6 Address 1 - Enter the IPv6 address for the first name server. If this field is empty or contains two colons it indicates that no server is configured. The value in this field may be overridden by DHCPv6.

Name Server IPv6 Address 2 - Enter the IPv6 address for the second name server. If this field is empty or contains two colons it indicates that no server is configured. The value in this field may be overridden by DHCPv6.

Dynamic DNS Registration - Select this checkbox to enable DDNS. Information is sent to the DHCP server so that it can register the printer's Hostname with DNS. Dynamic DNS Registration is enabled by default. It must be enabled to edit the Hostname.

Release Hostname Now! Select this button to immediately inform the server that the Hostname and IP address(es) reserved for this printer can be used for another device.

Note: Selecting this button may cause you to lose your connection to the printer. Contact your network administrator before changing DNS/WINS settings.

WINS Servers (IPv4)

Use these settings to reference servers (such as email servers) by name. WINS is not implemented over IPv6. The WINS name is the Hostname in the Name/Domain section on this page. These settings are also used in Job Accounting to display user host names instead of addresses. For more information, see the Job Accounting Help.

Primary WINS Server Address - Enter the IP address for the primary WINS name server. A value of all zeros indicates that no server is configured. If both primary and secondary name servers are undefined, the printer broadcasts (peer-to-peer) name recognition. The value in this field may be overwritten by BOOTP/DHCP.

Secondary WINS Server - Enter the IP address for the secondary WINS name server. A value of all zeros indicates that no server is configured. If both primary and secondary name servers are undefined, the printer broadcasts (peer-to-peer) name recognition. The value in this field may be overwritten by BOOTP/DHCP.

MDNS

Multicast DNS (Bonjour) Enable - When Multicast DNS (Bonjour) Enable is set to On, the printer is able to respond to Multicast DNS and be automatically discovered on an IP network by Apple Macintosh OS Bonjour technology. The default setting is On.
