Q:
Can I recycle the old consumable supplies, like toner cartridges, when
they are empty?
A: Xerox
provides a Waste-to-Energy
program -- a free service which safely and efficiently recovers valuable
energy from used Xerox color printer supplies. Check the Eligible
Items information to determine which consumable supplies are covered
for your specific printer model.
Q:
How do I use my printer as a color copier? Which scanners can I use?
A: By attaching
a supported scanner to your Phaser® 780 color printer,
you can use the printer as a color copier. The following scanners are
supported by the Phaser 780 color printer:
| Manufacturer |
Model |
ADF* Support |
| Hewlett-Packard |
HP ScanJet 6100C |
Yes |
| Hewlett-Packard |
HP ScanJet 6200C |
Yes |
| Microtek |
ScanMaker 4 |
Yes |
| Microtek |
ScanMaker 9600XL |
N/A |
* ADF = automatic
document feeder
Contact your local
reseller for availability.
Please note:
-
In general, only
the models listed above will work. If a different scanner model made
by either Hewlett-Packard or Microtek supports the identical command
set, byte order, and color characteristics of one of the listed scanners,
it may work. Scanners from other manufacturers will not work.
-
The Phaser 780
printer does not support the Xerox Phaser Copystation. Use the
Phaser Copystation only with the following Xerox products: Phaser
540, 550, 560, 340, 350, 380, and 600 color printers.
Q:
What is the email notification feature?
A: Using PhaserLink
software, the Phaser® 780 Color Printer can send an
email message when it detects an error condition. You can specify up to
three unique email addresses that can notify an operator, systems administrator,
or service provider, depending on the type of error detected.
Q:
Does the Phaser® 780 Color Printer support DHCP?
A: Yes, the
Phaser® 780 Color Printer does support DHCP. This allows
network plug and play for Windows NT systems. For additional information
on the use of DHCP, refer to the Microsoft Windows NT manuals.
Q:
Does the Phaser® 780 Color Printer support 100BaseT networks?
A: Yes, the
optional PhaserShare network card has support for 100BaseT Ethernet environments.
When this card is installed, the built-in 10BaseT connection is disabled.
Q:
How do I set up print queues on my UNIX® host?
A: The printer's
internal LPR queue uses the BSD protocol; you must use one of the following
names for the remote printer queue:
-
PS for PostScript®.
-
HPGL for HP-GL®
(Hewlett-Packard Graphics Language).
-
PCL for PCL®
(Printer Control Language).
-
AUTO for Automatic
language selection (the printer automatically senses the language
of the print job and processes it accordingly).
If you want to print
using Xerox® PhaserPrintTM 2.0 software,
you must use PhaserPrint software to configure your host. Refer to the
PhaserPrint software 2.0 user manual or the instructions provided with
the PhaserPrint software CD-ROM for configuration information.
If you are not using
PhaserPrint software, follow these instructions:
-
For SPARC®
and SGI® platforms, modify the etc/hosts file
to identify the printer to the workstation and modify the /etc/printcap
file to describe the printer to the workstation. For more information,
refer to Spooling configuration for SPARCstation
platforms (24K PDF ) or Spooling configuration for SGI platforms
(24K PDF ).
-
For Hewlett-Packard
platforms, use the Hewlett-Packard System Administrator Manager (SAM).
For more information, refer to Spooling configuration for HP platforms
(24K PDF ).
-
For IBM RS/6000TM
platforms, use the IBM System Management program smit. For
more information, refer to Spooling configuration for IBM RS/6000
platforms (24K PDF ).
-
For BSD hosts
not listed here, refer to Sample spooler configuration
for a typical BSD system (18K PDF
).
-
For System V hosts,
configure the queue as a remote BSD print queue (support for TCP/IP
lpr is required).

Q:
A Startup page prints every time I turn on the printer. Can I stop this
from happening?
A: You can
disable the Startup page from the printer's front panel, using utilities from your computer,
or through your web browser using PhaserLinkTM software.
- Note
-
If the printer
detects a non-fatal failure, it automatically prints a Startup page
containing diagnostic information regardless of the Startup-page setting.
Q:
How many pages can I print per toner cartridge?
A: The Phaser®
780 Color Printer uses a new toner cartridge design that provides higher
capacity and improved color consistency.
Print capacity depends
on how much of a particular primary color you use on a page. With 5 percent
page coverage per primary color on A-/A4-size paper, you can expect to
get about 5,900 pages for cyan, magenta, and yellow cartridges, and about
4,500 pages for a black cartridge.

Q:
What is PhaserLinkTM software and how does it help me?
A: PhaserLink software provides a breakthrough
in printer support. With PhaserLink software, you can check printer status,
configure printer settings, and access on-line documentation using industry-standard,
platform-independent software. This breakthrough concept uses HTTP (HyperText
Transfer Protocol) and HTML (HyperText Markup Language) as interfaces
to support these capabilities. These protocols are the basis for the tremendous
information-access power and flexibility of the World Wide Web (WWW).
You do not have to
add yet another vendor-proprietary piece of software to your systems.
You can use a standard web browser to access and configure printer information.
To use PhaserLink software, the network must be able to route TCP/IP.
Both Windows® 95 and Windows NT have this capability; Macintosh®
networks can add this easily with MacTCP®, and UNIX®
networks are based on TCP/IP. If there is a gateway to the WWW, you can
link directly to on-line documentation on the Xerox®
web server.
To connect to the
printer, enter the printer's IP address in your browser's URL input field,
or use a name or bookmark set up by your local system administrator.
Q:
What is the print speed of the Phaser® 780 Color Printer?
A: The print
speed depends on the print quality mode selected from either the printer's
front panel or from the printer driver, the page size and the type of
media. Speeds listed are for letter- and A4-size paper:

Q:What
are the average life expectancies of the consumable supplies in my Phaser®
780 Color Printer?
A:It is important
to remember that consumable life may vary based on several factors, including
the following:
-
Amount of coverage
used on each printed page.
-
Ratio of color-to-monochrome
prints produced.
-
Usage of specialty
media such as labels, card stock, etc.
-
Repetitive printing
of the same image.
The following table
shows how long each consumable should last, based on average coverage
(5%), above average coverage (10%), and high coverage (20%). Coverage
refers to the percentage of toner for any one color applied to the printable
area on letter/A4 laser paper.

Q:
What is TekColor® Automatic color correction?
A: The TekColor
Automatic color correction is the best choice for typical office printing.
This option automatically adjusts the color correction used for each page
according to the elements (i.e., images, graphics, or text) that are included
on the page, giving the best reproduction and print speed for each page
in a document.
Q:
How do I install my printer on a Windows® NT 4 server?
A: Use the
instructions provided to install the Windows
NT 4.0 PostScript® driver.
