Phaser 540

Shipping Phaser® 540 and 550 Printers
Follow the steps below if you are sending your printer to Tektronix® for service.

  1. Obtain a Return Authorization Number (RMA#) from the Tektronix Service Center. In the U.S.A. call1-800-835-6100, in Canada call 1-800-661-5625. Outside the U.S.A. and Canada, contact your local Tektronix dealer or sales representative; see the Local Contacts area on the World Wide Web.

  2. Locate the original Tektronix printer, accessories and consumables carton(s) and packing materials.
  3. Note: To keep your printer warranty valid, you must ship the printer in its Tektronix carton. If you do not have the original carton and packing materials, call the Customer Support Hotline at 1-800-835-6100 and order replacement packaging with part number 065-0548-00.

  4. Turn off the printer's power. Remove the power cord and all cables.
  5. Detach the output tray and pack it in its carton.

Remove the Media Tray(s)

  1. Put the media tray in the plastic bag.
  2. Place a styrofoam end cap on each end.
  3. Put the tray in its original shipping box.
  4. Repeat these steps for each media tray.

Remove the consumables

Caution: Wait for the printer to cool before removing any consumables.

To avoid printer damage and to ensure the printer's warranty, remove all consumables (toner cartridge, fuser, etc.) from the printer.

If requested by Tektronix Service, return the consumables, packed in their original cartons, to Tektronix.

Remove the Fuser

  1. Open the front door and the toner access door.
  2. Turn the small blue screw counterclockwise to unlock the fuser.
  3. Slide the fuser out of the printer and set it aside to cool.

Note: To avoid damage to the fuser, always wait for it to cool before repacking it.

  4. Wrap the fuser in the absorbent paper in which it was shipped.
  5. Place the fuser in the small plastic bag.
  6. Place a styrofoam end cap on each end of the fuser.
  7. Put the fuser into the larger plastic bag.
  8. Put the fuser (upright) into the original carton.

Remove the Imaging Unit

  1. Turn the center blue knob counterclockwise to release the imaging unit.

Caution: The green photoconductive belt on the imaging unit is very light-sensitive. Keep its exposure to artificial light to a minimum - no more than 45 seconds. Avoid all exposure to direct sunlight.

  2. Immediately cover the green photoconductive belt with the opaque black plastic cover and secure it with adhesive tape.
  3. After you remove the imaging unit, turn the two outside blue knobs counterclockwise to UNLOCK.
  4. If a toner vacuum is available, vacuum the imaging unit carefully, especially the ledge on the right side under the photoconductive belt.

Caution: Keep the imaging unit upright. Do not touch the green photoconductive belt (right side) or the black transfer belt (underside).

  5. Put the imaging unit into the small plastic bag.
  6. Place a styrofoam end cap on each end.
  7. Put the imaging unit into the larger plastic bag.

  8. Put the unit in its carton.

Remove the Toner Cartridges

  1. Put the shipping cover on each toner cartridge:
    1. Holding the cartridge as shown, slide the black roller cover back and hold it back with your thumb. Be careful not to touch the roller with your fingers.
    2. Hook the right end of the white plastic protective cover on the shaft end (the right side of the cartridge).
    3. Ease the plastic cover over the roller and hook the left end onto the gear (the left side of the cartridge).
    4. Place the foam sheet over the shipping cover and secure it with adhesive tape.

  2. Place the cartridge into the small (inner) bag.
  3. Place a styrofoam endcap on each end of the cartridge.
  4. Place the cartridge inside the larger plastic bag with a self-sealing seam.

  5. Put the cartridge inside its shipping box.
  6. Repeat these steps for each cartridge.

Empty the waste bin

  1. Pull out the paper transport.
  2. Remove the waste bin, vacuum it clean or carefully dump the waste toner in a waste basket, and put it back into the printer.

Vacuum the printer

  1. Vacuum any loose toner from the toner cartridge area of the printer. Vacuuming is strongly recommended before shipping the printer, but if a toner vacuum is not available, proceed with closing all doors and securing them with adhesive tape.

  2. Vacuum the imaging unit area of the printer. If a toner vacuum is not available, proceed with closing all doors and securing them with adhesive tape.

Close all doors and secure them with adhesive tape

Note: To close the toner access door when the fuser is out of the printer, you must press the small metal plate inside the door to release the hinge.

Detach Lower Tray Assembly, if present:

  1. Lift the printer up and away from the Lower Tray Assembly.
  2. Repack the Lower Tray Assembly in its carton.

Note: The printer weighs approximately 39 kg (85 lbs.) with the consumables removed. Observe standard safety precautions for lifting heavy objects.

Prepare the printer, accessories, and consumables for shipping

Note: If you do not have the original carton and packing materials, see the beginning of this article for ordering information.

  1. Write the Return Authorization Number (RMA#) on a sheet of paper. Attach this sheet to the top of the printer with adhesive tape.

Caution: To avoid damage to the cartridges and fuser, be sure that you pack them flat in the orientation shown. Position the various other pieces so that they fit snugly into the shipping box. Your shipping box may vary somewhat from this illustration.

  2. Write the Return Authorization Number (RMA#) on the outside of all cartons.
  3. Ship the printer (and consumables and accessories, if requested by Tektronix Service) to the following address:
