32-Mbyte RAM SIMM Installation

Only proprietary Tektronix RAM SIMMs will operate correctly in Tektronix Color printers.

Static electricity precautions

  • Leave the printer plugged into its power outlet; this preserves a ground path for static discharges.
  • Touch the printer's bare metal frame often to discharge static electricity from your body.
  • Handle the circuit board(s) by their edges only.
  • Do not lay the board(s) on a metal surface.
  • Avoid wearing nylon or polyester clothing; they generate static electricity.

Phaser 380 installation

  1. Power down the printer. Leave the power cord plugged in to provide a ground path for static discharges. Remove the interface cables.
  2. Loosen the main board's two rear panel securing screws.
  3. Grasp the handle and slide out the main board.
  4. Loosen the two rear panel securing screws. Slide out the main board.

NOTE: Connector J88 already contains a 16-Mbyte RAM SIMM. A 16-Mbyte RAM SIMM must always occupy connector J88. A Kanji version printer will also contain an 8-MByte RAM SIMM in connector J9. The 8-MByte RAM SIMM can be replaced with a larger SIMM.
  5. Insert a 32-Mbyte RAM SIMM in connector J9 (a) next to J88, and tilt the module up until it locks in place (b). If J9 is already occupied by a SIMM, install the new RAM SIMM in connector J89.

When properly inserted, a tab on each end of the connector slips into a hole on each end of the RAM SIMM. Also, a pawl on each end of the connector latches around each end of the RAM SIMM to lock it in place.
  6. Reinstall the main board into the printer. Reconnect the host interface cables. Turn on the printer and print the startup page; it lists the amount of memory installed in the printer. Update your host computer's printer driver; this involves configuring the printer driver residing on your computer. Refer to the user manual.
