Cleaning the printer
Periodically cleaning the printer can help you avoid various paper-feeding, paper-jamming, and image-quality problems. Use the cleaning kit to clean the drum, the wiper, the paper clamp, the paper tension blade, and the paper-pick rollers inside the printer. You can also use the kit to clean the fuser roller and the feed rollers.

For information on how to identify printing problems and the solutions that involve cleaning, refer to the General cleaning guide.

When you receive your new printer, you receive these cleaning supplies:

  1. Cleaning Instructions booklet
  2. Cleaning tool
  3. Lint-free wipes
  4. Foam swabs
  5. Plastic bottle for dispensing isopropyl alcohol
  6. Fuser cleaning pad

Reorder cleaning kit supplies

To reorder the cleaning kit (Tektronix order number 016-1144-00):

  1. Cleaning Instructions booklet
  2. Cleaning tool
  3. Lint-free wipes (isopropyl alcohol-saturated)
  4. Fuser cleaning pad
  5. Fuser wiper
  6. Foam swabs (isopropyl alcohol-saturated)

Using isopropyl alcohol

You must supply isopropyl alcohol (available at pharmacies) because shipping regulations prohibit supplying alcohol or presoaked cleaning materials with the printer.

In general, it is best to use the purest isopropyl alcohol (99%) available to you. Alcohol that is 90% pure also works well. You can use 70% pure isopropyl alcohol, but if you do, you must wait much longer after cleaning to ensure that it is completely dry. For example, 99% isopropyl alcohol might dry in as quickly as one minute; 70% isopropyl alcohol can take as long as 15 minutes.

Caution:Do not use rubbing alcohol because it can contain oils that leave undesirable residue on the printer parts.

Wherever the cleaning instructions refer to a lint-free cloth moistened with isopropyl alcohol (A), you can substitute a pre-soaked alcohol cloth (B). The reorder cleaning kit (order number 016-1144-00) includes these pre-soaked alcohol cloths. You can also order these packets separately in packs of 10 (order number 006-7824-00).

Cleaning the paper-pick rollers

If you have been using coated paper, you may have to clean the paper-pick rollers to avoid paper-pick problems. To prevent paper-pick problems, clean the paper-pick rollers every time you replace the fuser wiper and open a new box of black ink. Use an alcohol-dampened wipe to clean the paper-pick rollers.

  1. Remove the paper tray and open the top cover.
  2. Place and hold the wipe against the bottom of a roller.
  3. Rotate the paper-pick roller three to four times by turning the bar.
  4. Repeat Steps 2 and 3 for each roller.

Cleaning the feed rollers

If you have been using coated paper, you may have to clean the feed rollers to avoid paper jams. Use an alcohol-dampened wipe to clean the top and bottom feed rollers.

  1. Open the top cover.
  2. Place and hold a wipe against each roller. Turn the top roller to clean.

Cleaning the paper tension blade, paper clamp, and drum

If your prints have streaks or spots, clean the paper tension blade, paper clamp, and drum. When you clean the paper tension blade, paper clamp, and drum, the printer must be in Utilities mode.

  1. When the printer is on and the Ready message appears in the front panel, press the UTILITIES button. You see this message (Vx.xx is the firmware version number):

    Utilities Vx.xx
    Exit Next

In the Utilities mode, you can scroll through the menu selections using the TEST PRINT button (which corresponds to Next in the first menu window), and execute a function or change a setting using the CLEAN PRINT HEAD button (which corresponds to Exit in the first menu window).

  2. Press the TEST PRINT button several times to reach this message:

    Cleaning mode
    Start Next

  3. Press the CLEAN PRINT HEAD button to reach this message:

    Cleaning mode
    Open cover to clean

  4. Open the top cover. When the top cover is open, this message appears in the front panel:

    Cleaning mode
    Clean drum

  5. Press the button inside the printer to open the rear cover.

After you open the rear cover, the following message appears in the front panel:

    Cleaning mode
    Clean blade

When the message appears, the paper tension blade is positioned so that you can clean it.

  6. Clean the paper tension blade with the cleaning tool provided:
    1. Place an alcohol-dampened wipe over the cleaning tool.
    2. Press the cleaning tool over the edge of the paper tension blade.
    3. Clean the entire length of the paper tension blade and continue cleaning the blade until you remove the ink. You may have to reposition the wipe as you clean. Although you may not be able to see it, there may be ink on the back of the blade as well as the front. It is very important that you clean the back of the blade thoroughly.

Warning:The printhead is hot. Do not touch it.

The paper tension blade has a sharp edge; to avoid injury, use the cleaning tool provided when you clean the blade.

  7. Close the rear cover so that the following message appears in the front panel:

    Cleaning mode
    Clean drum

  8. Hold down the TEST PRINT button to rotate the drum until the paper clamp appears and opens.
  9. Use an alcohol-dampened foam swab to clean the paper clamp. Clean inside and outside the paper clamp.

Warning:The paper clamp has sharp edges. To avoid injury, be careful when you clean the paper clamp.

  10. Clean the drum.
    1. Hold down the TEST PRINT button to rotate the drum until the paper clamp closes.
    2. Use an alcohol-dampened wipe to clean the drum. Press the TEST PRINT or CLEAN PRINT HEAD buttons to rotate the drum. Clean the drum only when it is not moving. Be sure to clean the entire drum.

If wiping the drum by hand does not remove the ink, go to Steps c and d.

    3. Wrap the cleaning tool with an alcohol-dampened wipe.
    4. Clean the drum using a back-and-forth motion with the cleaning tool.

  11. Close both covers when you finish cleaning the printer.
  12. Press the TEST PRINT button until you see this message on the front panel:

    Utilities Vx.xx
    Exit Next

  13. Press the CLEAN PRINT HEAD button to exit Utilities mode.
  14. Make a test print (you might need to make a few test prints to clear any residual ink). If, after making the test prints, you still see streaks or spots on the print, refer to Problems, solutions, hints.

Cleaning the head wiper

You should clean the head wipe under the following conditions:
  • Once every 500 prints or at least once per month.

  • Before and after performing the Clean Print Head procedure to cure missing dots in a vertical row or a missing horizontal line. If you need to run the Clean Print Head procedure several times, clean the head wipe between each procedure.

  1. Make sure that the Ready message appears in the front panel. Open the top and rear covers.

Caution:Never scrape the head wiper with a tool or your fingertip because you could damage it. Clean the head wiper with an alcohol-dampened swab only.

  2. Working from the back of the printer, slide the printhead to the far right side of the printer.

Warning:The printhead is hot. Do not touch it.

  3. Use an alcohol-dampened foam swab to clean the head wiper.

  4. Leaving the printhead in the cleaning position, close the top and rear covers.

Cleaning the fuser rollers

If you are using shiny or smooth paper, you may occasionally see spots of ink in the white portion of the printed image, or you may notice that areas of the image are missing. These print defects can indicate that ink is being transferred from the printed paper to the fuser roller.

To correct the problem, first try these quick steps:

Quick Steps

  1. Use a less shiny type of paper.
  2. Make several test prints on standard office Bond paper (laser printer or photocopy paper). To do this, press the TEST PRINT button on the front panel. Be sure to load the paper so that the long side of the paper enters the printer first, as shown.

You should see a repeating pattern of ink spots on the blank part of the paper, indicating that the ink has transferred from the fuser onto the paper.

  3. If the problem persists, replace the fuser wiper (refer to "Changing the fuser wiper" for details).

If the problem continues, follow these procedures:

Note:For your convenience, you may order a package of five fuser wiper pads (order number 650-2564-00); call the Tektronix Graphics Supplies Order Desk toll-free in the U.S. at 1-800-835-6100, or call your local Tektronix dealer.
